PAULOS Mahasha will spend the rest of his life in prison for attempted rape and murder of a 12-year old disabled girl in Prieska outside Phalaborwa, Limpopo.
He was sentenced in the Polokwane High Court this week.
In January last year, Mahasha (41) lured the girl, Loveness Moyana, away from her home to the bush. He stripped her naked, attempted to rape her before cutting her throat.
She was found the following day by community members who launched a search after her disappearance.
Mahasha was sentenced to 20 years for attempted rape and life imprisonment for murder. The sentences will run concurrently.
Municipal ward councillor Sophia Mahomane welcomed the sentence: “We are highly delighted with the court judgement because we were living in fear thinking that the court might find him innocent. This judgement will send a strong message to other murderers and criminals.
Mahomane said the judgement will go a long way in boosting government policies in fighting crime.
“We cannot just be seen as fighting crime without real action. This judgement is a clear indication that our courts fully understand what the government aims to achieve in protecting women, children and disabled people,” she said.
