TWENTY learners have been killed in a collision between a minibus and truck on the R25 road in Groblersdal outside of Bronkhorstspruit, North of Pretoria on Friday afternoon. Paramedics and fire services are on the scene and injured learners are being treated for minor as well as more serious injuries, with many being transported to nearby hospitals.

“It is with great sadness that we inform that a minibus transporting learners was involved in a horrific accident, and about 20 learners died on the scene,” the Gauteng Department of Education said in a statement earlier this afternoon.
The MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi has rushed to the scene.

ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the fire services already in attendance. The taxi that the learners were travelling in caught fire after the accident.

He said fire services had already extinguished the burning vehicle, which was found lying on its side.

“Paramedics assessed the scene and found that approximately 20 children had been inside the vehicle when it collided with the truck,” he said.

Once the flames had been extinguished, paramedics found children lying trapped inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the children and they were declared dead on the scene, he added.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities are on the scene for further investigations.
