LIMPOPO’S Mogalakwena mayor Adriana Matsemela has come out guns blazing to defend the acting municipal manager against a barrage of accusations levelled against him.

She has labelled the allegations levelled against Andile Mashele as attempts to tarnish his image following his appointment. Matsemela said the claims were a plot by looters to collapse the municipality and delay stability.

Matsemela told African Times that she holds strong believe that the allegations that Mashele is involved in tender scandals within the municipality are just aspersions aimed at discrediting Mashele in order to tarnish his image because his arrival at the municipality came as a stumbling block for some officials who have been looting from the municipality for years.

She indicated she was pleased with the progress in the municipality and Mashele’s introduction has brought tangible changes, with a number of services being offered to the people of Mokgalakwena while at the same time eradicating corruption. “I have been working tirelessly with Mashele in rooting out corruption in this municipality and truth is, some internal staff is just fabricating lies so that we can be discouraged in the work that we are doing. We will not allow corrupt individuals, some who are not even qualified in their current positions to continue in destabilizing our municipality,” Matsemela said.

According to reports circulating on social media, it is alleged that Mashele who has been the acting municipal manager for the past three months has been involved in scandals regarding the awarding of a tender to a company that he allegedly has ties to. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The documents for the tender in question were signed by his predecessor Miriam Molala.

Mashele said the allegations against him were nothing but a ploy to discredit his character due to his strong administrative interventions employed aimed at enhancing compliance and internal control environment in the municipality.

“I would have preferred to be judged as a competent administrator with vast amount of experience in management, so these unfortunate tricks are just intended to scare me or my colleagues who are championing the course to see Mogalakwena improved and back to its feet again,” he said.
