A 40-year-old Limpopo attorney appeared in the Tzaneen magistrate court on Thursday on charges of fraud and theft.

Stanley Samuel Malatji was arrested by members of the Hawks Commercial Unit after Attorney Fidelity Fund reported financial irregularities made from their accounts. This followed complaints from several clients.

Malatji is a director of a well-established law firm in Tzaneen.

Hawks spokesperson in Limpopo, Captain Matimba Maluleke, declined to name the law firm as this may bring it into dispute.

It is alleged that Malatji claimed money from Road Accident Fund (RAF) on behalf of his clients. After the money was paid into the trust fund account, he withdrew all of it for himself without paying out the clients.

As a result, Attorneys Fidelity Fund lost an estimated amount of R1,9m.

He was granted R5000 bail and the case was postponed April 12 for further investigation.
