The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Jim Ledwaba has welcomed the two life sentences given to a convicted rapist khutjo Donald Shai by the Polokwane High Court this week.
Shai, who had been terrorrising the communities of Burgersfort and Mecklenburg between 2013 and 2015, was handed TWO (02) LIFE imprisonment plus TEN YEARS behind bars for crimes including rape,house breaking with intend to rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
During the commission of these crimes, the accused was out on parole for a common robbery crime that he committed during 2015.
These heavy jail terms emanate from separate incidents.
On the 13th January 2013, the accused broke into a house at ga-Kgwete village in the Mecklenburg policing area outside Burgersfort and threatened an 18-year old woman and her sibling.
Afterwards he forced the victim to an abandoned house where he raped her several times before fleeing the scene.
Meanwhile in the same area, on the 23rd of December 2013, he forcefully took a 47 year old victim to the nearby bushes next to ga-Kgwete village where he repeatedly raped and assaulted her before fleeing the scene with her cellphone and money.
On the 3rd of April 2015, Shai lured an 18-year old woman to a house at ga-Mashishi village where he repeatedly raped her. The ordeal lasted until the following day.
The Provincial Commissioner has applauded the sterling work done by members of the component at Burgersfort specialising in cases related to Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS).
“This will go a long way in ensuring perpetrators of these kind offences face the full might of the law” concluded, General Ledwaba.
